Youth

Out today: “Youth”

This is a little different sound for me, but it’s a special song with a special back story.

I randomly started writing this song sometime last year. The synth sounds I was using reminded me of early Lights, a la 'The Listening', when my son (4) came in the room and started playing along with me. He does this often, but something magical happened.

The notes he was hitting were lining up with what I was playing, and would eventually become those lower scales that you hear throughout the song. It was at this point that the song essentially became a collaboration between he and I.

I wanted this song to represent that kind of playful, whimsical, and fun feeling of being a kid, so it only made sense to also include some home recordings of what being a kid meant to him.

I was originally going to release this song under a side project. But I decided against it, as every aspect of my life has found its way into and inspired my music, so why not continue that? Especially albums like “Episodic Memory”. Every year for the past few years, I’ve been releasing a special song or set of songs on his birthday as a special gift to him that will hopefully be around for a long time. I’m hoping it will serve almost as a time capsule for this moment.

In 2018, it was the album “Episodic Memory”, an album inspired by my time with him. In 2019, an acoustic version of the song “Episodic Memory”, and this year - “Youth”. Happy Birthday, Parker. Never lose that sense of wonder and youth.
